Q: I work with a culturally diverse team, not just from different parts of the world, but also with different religions. With December here, do you have suggestions for celebrating the holidays in a way that’s inclusive of our employee’s diverse cultures?
A: Great question! As the workplace has become increasingly multicultural, we are slowly beginning to recognize some of the many cultural festivals and religious celebrations that happen during this time of year. Of course we all look forward to enjoying our own familiar traditions and observances. But I believe we can enhance our enjoyment of the season not only by appreciating other cultural traditions, but also by focusing on the commonalities we share. Here are some suggestions:
Start by posting an inclusive cultural calendar in the break room– This way everyone feels included, plus it gets people talking and curious about different ways to celebrate the season.
Encourage sharing of cultures through food. Every important holiday involves preparing some special food or dish. Now is a perfect time to plan a potluck feast where employees have an opportunity to share their creation with colleagues. Everyone gets to try each other’s foods and hear their stories.
Regarding Christmas: Don’t assume religiosity. Many people experience the holidays from a secular perspective. And no, this doesn’t mean they will be offended if you wish them a Merry Christmas –although Happy Holidays is always the safest bet. The Christmas holiday is observed and enjoyed by non-Christians and non-practicing Christians as a time of common goodwill, generosity and giving. Not to mention friends, family gatherings and food.
Find a common cause to support. Kindness is universal. This is a great time to get everyone in the team behind the effort to contribute to needy families, Sandy relief efforts or other worthy charities. There’s a lot to be said for the act of collective giving.
I hope these ideas help you find ways to build on the diversity of your workplace and that the coming season is a blessing for your employees to enrich their lives by learning about each other’s cultural traditions.
