2015 Party Etiquette for Employees, Millennials and the Boss

The economy is improving, companies are hiring and this year’s holiday party is likely to be brighter than in years past.  As I do every year, (I consider it my HR duty) I’d like to remind my readers about workplace party etiquette.  Here’s my 2015 refresher:

For Employees

DO show up If you think attending is optional you are deluded.  Consider this a fun but mandatory meeting.  So arrive on time, and stay at least an hour.

DO mingle.  Especially with people in other departments, or with higher-ups you seldom see.

DON’T get hammered.  An open bar is a test of your good judgment. Don’t have more than two drinks.  A lot of cringe-inducing memories and pictures can result from not heeding that advise.

DON’T be a downer.  Avoid talking about anything depressing or disagreeable –topics like terrorism, the election or your root canal should be avoided.  The point is to have a good time.  Stick to light fare like travel, hobbies, kids and pets.

For Millennials

DO assume your picture will be taken and that you’ll show up on someone’s social media page so dress and act accordingly.

DON’T check your phone constantly.  It makes you look socially inept and uncomfortable.

Don’t overshare.    GenXers and Boomers are more reserved and private and would rather not hear your personal stuff.  They also have a lower tolerance for “F” bombs. So, dial it down.

For Employers

DO acknowledge and celebrate successes.  This is a great opportunity to highlight company gains and recognize employee achievements. Don’t waste it.

DO think of cultural and religious diversity in your workforce and provide a wide range of food choices, like vegetarian and vegan.

DON’T offer an open bar.  Actually from a liability perspective you should offer no alcohol period, but that’s not always realistic.  DO set a limit, and make sure employees have a safe way home.

DON’T pull rank, even if you’re the boss.   This is one of the rare occasions when the formal hierarchy is blurred and employees get to interact equally as people, when the accounting manager and the janitor can find out they both have a passion for jazz.
