New office etiquette during Covid 19

Because we are being advised not to shake hands and shaking hands is a normal part of work life I thought it would be helpful to offer some ideas I’ve come across for handshake alternatives.

And while we are at it we can revisit some other office etiquette and see how we can adapt to protect ourselves and others.

HANDSHAKE ALTERNATIVES

Fist bump

If someone offers you their hand to shake you can politely offer to do a “fist bump” instead. Your palm may face down or sideways. Bump lightly.

Elbow bump

Another option is the elbow bump. Although this gesture tends to brings you a bit closer to the other person and may also be awkward if there’s a big difference in stature.

Namaste greeting (or Wai)

Bring palms together and move them to your chest as you bow slightly and maintain eye contact. This is very gracious, but unlike a handshake it does require two hands so plan ahead and put down your Starbucks.

Vulcan salute.

If you are in a light mood you can always try the old standby “live long and prosper”.

Adding a smile to any of the gestures helps overcome any awkwardness.

If you are still conducting face-to-face interviews, let applicants know new rules and precautions in advance. Interviews are stressful enough without adding surprises.

BEYOND WASHING HANDS

Yes, we all know to be careful with door knobs and handles, but don’t forget about those items we share less frequently: the stapler, the copying machine, the conference room speaker, TV monitor remotes, the break room area, vending machines, light switches. All these should be wiped frequently, or better yet, right before and after you use them.

IF YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS, GO HOME

Normally, if you sneezed and the world isn’t facing a pandemic, someone would say “Bless you” and not give it a second thought. Now, if you sneeze, (or have a cough) that same person is going to look at you and think, “you shouldn’t be here”. It’s not fair, it might just be allergies, but no one wants you to be a trooper and soldier on like they would have a month ago. This is a new paradigm. Do yourself and everyone else a favor, go home.

Soap box moment: Pace yourself, it will get worse before it gets better. And it’s going to take a while.
